Answer: Either 1 or 2 years depending on frequency of use and storage (sun exposure). Personnel baskets should be replaced immediately, no matter the age, if it fails pre-use inspection.
Answer: We do not recommend refurbishing personnel nets/ baskets with the exception of the X-904. Personnel baskets are designed to last in the field 1-2 years depending on the frequency of their use. As an example, most shallow water operations both drilling and production use their personnel basket frequently and sometimes even daily. These units should be replaced annually. Operations that transfer personnel via crane less frequently (such as those in deeper water who utilize helicopters more often) can replace their personnel basket after 2 years of use- or if the net/basket fails inspection.
*It is not cost effective or recommended to refurbish these baskets in either scenario.
Answer: Repairs of non-load bearing parts are permissible such as, covers and stabilizer units. BPC does not recommend making repairs on the load bearing components.
Answer: Yes, please check the X-904 section of this website.
Answer: ABS Type Approval is thoroughly explained in the ABS section of this website.
Answer: Please refer to the ABS section of this website.
Answer: Many BPC customers require this additional 3rd party certification. It is an extra guarantee that our personnel transfer devices are manufactured with a high level of quality and that the product designs has been evaluated and tested.
Answer: Cost will vary depending on the condition of the unit but as a general rule somewhere between 40-50% of the price of a new one.
Answer: The X-904 was designed to be rebuilt and refurbished; personnel baskets were not. Do to their initial cost it also makes financial sense to refurbish the X-904. Conversely, personnel nets/baskets initial cost is much lower and its design is not conducive or economical for rebuilding.
Answer: Only personnel transfer devices that we recommend refurbish are the X-904 series. The list of participating certified refurbishment companies are included on this website.
Answer: Once these units have been in use for over 2 years we will not provide documentation or certification as they have exceeded their recommended lifespan.
Answer: As a rule, BPC does not recommend pull testing personnel nets. If inspection and replacement procedures are followed, pull testing should not be necessary.
Answer: The X-904 is manufactured with a variety of components such as wire rope, synthetic rope, floatation, cover materials etc. All of these components are affected by the harsh offshore environment they operate in. This wear would include general wear and tear, UV degradation as well as the salt water conditions offshore. These effected parts are all critical in the performance and operation (and most importantly) the safety of the X-904.
The X-904 is a device that carries the most important “cargo” in the offshore community…people.
The X-904 is designed to be inspected before each use then have a more thorough inspection every 6 months and be refurbished every two years (with the understanding that it had passed the daily and 6 month inspections). The two year refurbishment helps to insure that these devices are more than ready to do the job that they were designed for…Why two years? Because we have found that on average (based on over 50 years of manufacturing safety equipment for offshore use) two years in the field is the maximum time that we can recommend these type devices operate without these critical parts being replaced. Please note: after the 3rd refurbishment of the X-904 you will be required to purchase a new device.
We cannot afford to be wrong even once as there is not a more critical device offshore than a personnel transfer device.
Answer: The date the BPC lifting device (personnel net, X-904, X-8CB etc) is unwrapped is the “In Service Date”. That date should be noted on the certificate that comes with the device. The “In Service Date” can then be used as the date for aging the device for inspections and replacement. If during inspection it is found that there is not an “In Service Date” recorded, then the “In Service Date” will defer back to the “Manufacturing Date” which is noted on tags and paperwork.
Answer: 3 years
Answer: The X-904 is rated at 300 lbs per person. IE: The X-904 4 person has a WLL of 1200 lbs.
Several years ago, we had a Cargo Basket (model X8-CB) exposed to chemicals that degraded the rigging ropes to the point they all 24 of them broke at the same time. (No one was injured but the potential was there.) These ropes are rated at 9950 lbs. each (238,000 lbs. total) and the break was caused by carrying approximately 1500 lbs. Please be careful when exposing any fiber rope or sling to corrosive chemicals as it can seriously affect the performance and strength of the ropes.
Regular replacement and inspection of all lifting products is highly recommended. We would also recommend that all procedures that have the potential to subject synthetic ropes, slings and fall protection to corrosives be reviewed; as all of these products are possible targets of chemical degradation.
We have also added some additional tools for detecting chemical damage to our ropes in our inspection section of this website.
We will continue to update you as more information becomes available.
We recently reviewed an incident in which one of our DB-1 Derrick Baskets was broken during operation. After investigating the incident, in which no one was actually hurt, it was revealed that the DB-1 was not used properly. This “purpose built” product is designed to operate inside the derrick with proper secondary fall protection and attached to an air tugger. This lightweight device has only a single point attachment to the hook and is not designed to be operated with a crane. If you are operating inside the derrick, you will find that the streamlined DB-1 will safely move throughout the derrick when used properly.
If you need a multi-use basket you will find that our Collapsible Work Basket, OSHA Man Basket and Rigid Cargo Basket will better serve your purpose.
